The July call we can usually prevent
Air conditioners fail on the hottest day of the year for an unglamorous reason: that is the day they are asked to run hardest, and a marginal part finally gives up. A frozen evaporator coil, a failed capacitor, a clogged condensate drain, low refrigerant from a slow leak — these are all things a spring tune-up finds while it is still an inexpensive fix.
Ice on the unit is a symptom, not the problem
If your AC has frozen over, switching it off and thawing it will get you cooling again for a day or two — but ice is downstream of something else. Restricted airflow from a filthy filter, a blower problem, or low refrigerant. We find the cause rather than melting the evidence and leaving.
Ductless and zoned cooling
Not every room needs to be on the same system. Ductless mini-splits cool a converted garage, a finished basement, an addition or a bonus room without extending ductwork into it — often for less than the cost of the ducting alone, and with independent control of that space.
